Inspired by Arthur Schnitzler’s La Ronde, THE CIRCUIT reimagines the classic cycle of intimate encounters as a pulse-driven, fully immersive silent disco ballet. Produced by New York Theatre Company, this bold new work fuses dance, theatre, and nightlife into a visceral experience that is intimate, fluid, and unapologetically provocative.
Upon arrival, audience members receive wireless headphones. Through them, the entire world of the show unfolds — a fully realised play and an original EDM score transmitted directly into your ears. You hear whispered dialogue, internal monologues, ambient sound, and a live-mixed soundscape with cinematic clarity. Nothing is projected outward. No voices fill the room. Every confession, every breath, every thought feels as though it’s meant for you alone.
And yet, what you see is something entirely different.
While you are hearing a play and an original score, you are watching dance unfold in real time — on the streets of DUMBO. As you follow characters from site to site outdoors, choreography erupts against the backdrop of cobblestone streets, alleyways, storefronts, and the Manhattan Bridge skyline. Language lives in your headphones; physicality lives in the city around you. The result is a thrilling dual experience: an intimate narrative in your ears and a visceral ballet unfolding live in the open air.
There is no traditional stage. No fixed seat. You move with the performers through the neighbourhood, tracing a looping chain of desire and consequence — seduction, power, vulnerability, violence, longing, and collapse. Each audience member curates their own journey, shaped by who they follow, where they linger, and which moments they choose to witness.
The experience is both collective and deeply personal. Though everyone inhabits the same world, no two paths are identical. The constant electronic pulse creates an emotional throughline, transforming even stillness into something electric and cinematic.
Co-directed by Josh Zacher and John Kroft, choreographed by Josh Zacher, written by Connor Wentworth, and with an original score and sound design by Jacob Ryan Smith, with associate sound design by Anna Tobin, THE CIRCUIT dissolves the boundary between spectator and participant.
This is not just a performance — it’s a charged, sensory loop of sex, rhythm, and reckoning set against the heartbeat of Brooklyn itself.
